*What the hell is bioavailability? The bioavailability describes what percentage of a nutrient or active ingredient really arrives in the organism and can work there.

The 3 Vegan Support Superstars:
-
Vitamin B12 - Vitamin B12 is mainly stored in the liver and is involved in the production of red blood cells. Energy metabolism, nerve protection and the production of neurotransmitters and DNA also require an adequate supply of vitamin B12. A deficiency manifests itself in psychological problems, chronic exhaustion and lack of energy. It should be noted that an imbalance in the gastrointestinal tract can lead to the absorption of the vitamin being impaired. That is why a healthy gut is particularly important. In addition, vitamin B12 is mainly found in animal foods. Vegans and vegetarians should therefore pay particular attention to the supply (a dietary supplement of vitamin B12 is strongly recommended by vegan organizations).
-
Iron - Iron is a vital trace element that is essential for oxygen transport in the blood, for cell formation and for the function of the immune system. Iron deficiency manifests itself, for example, in sluggishness, lack of motivation and exhaustion. Iron is found in both animal and plant foods, but the iron contained in plants (e.g.B Legumes) are less easily absorbed by the body because absorption is inhibited by the phytic acid in plants. That is why vegans and vegetarians are often affected by an insufficient supply of the trace element. Vitamin C and other bioactive substances ensure that iron absorption in the intestine is supported.
-
Calcium - Calcium is known for supporting bone density. Your body also needs it so that your heart, muscles and nerves can function properly. Incidentally, the body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium, so it is advisable to ensure that you consume sufficient amounts of both. Did you know that the body cannot produce calcium itself? Therefore, the mineral must be ingested through diet. Dairy products such as cheese, milk and yogurt, but also fish and various types of vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage are rich in calcium. Especially if you eat vegan or are lactose intolerant, it makes sense to supplement your diet with additional calcium.
A little nutrition guide for you:
Just leave out animal products? It's not that easy, because so that you absorb all the important nutrients and prevent deficiencies, your vegan menu should actually be bigger rather than smaller. Here you get a little guide for a healthy, vegan diet:
1) A good base
In any case, remember to always drink enough liquid, preferably water, tea or other low-calorie drinks! Drinking enough is important with any diet; in the vegan diet, it mainly supports the transport of the many dietary fibers through the digestive tract and thus prevents constipation or bloating. Since vegans avoid dairy products, you can also ensure a sufficient supply of calcium with calcium-enriched plant drinks.
→ Drink at least 1.5 liters every day.
2) Colorful base
The basis of your solid food consists of vegetables and fruit, of course. They provide you with important vitamins, such as vitamin C. A rule of thumb is: the more colorful, the better - because a variety of vegetables and fruits ensures that a good mix of different nutrients reaches your body and prevents deficiencies caused by an unbalanced diet. Our tip: Pickled vegetables contain many beneficial bacteria and antioxidants. Hardly any vitamins are lost through the fermentation process and the vegetables are even easier to digest.
→ With each meal, approx. Half of your plate will be occupied by vegetables and fruit.
3) Full & energetic
Whole grain cereals such as brown rice, oat flakes or whole grain bread provide valuable dietary fiber as well as B vitamins, iron and zinc, among other things. Potatoes and wholemeal pasta are also suitable filling side dishes, although with the latter you have to make sure that the recipe is egg-free. If you want to be on the safe side, you can simply make your own bread and pasta, so you know all about the ingredients and how fresh they are made!
→ The portion on your plate should consist of approx. a quarter of a (whole grain) side dish.
4) protein suppliers
Chickpeas, lentils and other legumes are good sources of protein for your body. Soy products are particularly good because they are an excellent source of protein and calcium at the same time. Kernels, nuts and seeds - for example pumpkin seeds, chia, flaxseed, peanuts and walnuts - also contain a lot of protein.
→ Another quarter on your plate should be protein sources.
5) In moderation
Especially when it comes to fats: quality over quantity. Vegetable oils, preferably cold-pressed oils such as olive oil, are ideal because they are rich in unsaturated fatty acids that can counteract inflammation. Flaxseed oil is particularly rich in healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Avocados not only contain many monounsaturated fatty acids, which have a positive effect on cholesterol levels, but also score with important vitamins and minerals. Walnuts and flaxseed are also good sources of good fat.
→ Build approx. Include 4 tablespoons of healthy fat in your daily diet.
With a predominantly plant-based diet, particular attention should be paid to consuming sufficient vitamins and minerals. Dietary supplements therefore represent a sensible support for the body!
